New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday rang the alarm bells, telling the states that terror is lurking in the country in every corner and suicide bombers are on the prowl, waiting to target economic, religious and nuclear establishments anywhere any time.
"The intelligence agencies have warned that terrorist modules and sleeper cells are operating freely in urban areas of the country," the Prime Minister told the chief ministers' meeting on internal security in the Capital.
"Intelligence agencies have warned of further use of suicide bombers, attack on economic, religious and nuclear establishments," he said.
Stressing on the urgent need to face up to the challenge of terrorism, the PM regretted that the states were not doing enough to fill up the existing vacancies in police and other law and order agencies. He also underlined the need to beef up the intelligence network and holding of special training for the forces to face the looming threat.
On a cautious note, the PM, however, regretted that the Muslim community was being increasingly targeted for every act of terror. "It is unfortunate that terrorism has created a wrong impression about the entire Muslim community," he said.
The Prime Minister also expressed concern over the fast expansion of the Naxalite movement. "We need a blend of firm but sophisticated and sensitive handling of Naxal violence," the PM said, adding that "special training for forces is a must for those engaged in anti-Naxalite operations."
He said an Empowered Group of Ministers will be created to closely monitor the spread of Naxalite movement in the country. It will be headed by the Union Home Minister and will include selected chief ministers.
