Pseudo-Secularism

Hindu dharma is implicitly at odds with monotheistic intolerance. What is happening in India is a new historical awakening... Indian intellectuals, who want to be secure in their liberal beliefs, may not understand what is going on. But every other Indian knows precisely what is happening: deep down he knows that a larger response is emerging even if at times this response appears in his eyes to be threatening.

Christian Minister Diverts Hindu Temple Funds for Sewage System

GURUVAYUR
The Hindu

Protest is mounting here over the reported move of the Oommen Chandy Government to utilise the Guruvayur Devaswom funds for implementing the sewage treatment plant and water supply scheme for the area.

The CPI(M) fellow traveller and former MLA of Guruvayur, P. T. Kunjumuhammed, the BJP, the National Congress (Indira) and a host of other organisations such as the Akhila Bharatha Guruvayurappan Theerthadaka Kshema Samithi (ABGTKS) have come out in the open against the move and demanded that the Government should bear the entire expenditures for the schemes.

Mr. Kunjumuhammed told The Hindu here that reports indicated that the high-level meeting convened by the Chief Minister in Thiruvanathapuram had decided to share the cost of the schemes between the Devaswom, the municipality and the Government at 30:30:40 ratio. But this was unlikely to happen as it would be difficult for the Devaswom to share money within the constraints of the existing legal frame-work and court orders.

He said that during the tenure of the previous LDF Government, it was decided that the entire cost of the sewage treatment plant, estimated to be Rs.10 crores then, would be borne by the State Government. The LDF Government had proposed to set up a separate water supply scheme for the people of Chakkamkandam as a relief for setting up the plant there. The contract for the scheme was also awarded to a Bangalore- based company.

``Now we understand that the Government has cancelled that contract and a fresh tender is being invited. It has always been the agenda of the Muslim League to sabotage the sewage treatment plant at Guruvayur, and Mr. Chandy is trying to implement that agenda, by insisting that the Devaswom must share the cost,'' Mr. Kunjumuhammed said.

He recalled that a water supply scheme from the Thrithala project for Guruvayur was already under implementation. Now the Government was proposing another scheme to bring water from the Karuvannur river which is far away from Guruvayur, abandoning the Thrithala scheme which is 50 per cent complete.

The BJP Guruvayur Mandalam committee office-bearers V. K. Sasiskumar and Sreekumar Ezhaveppadi, expressed strong protest against the move to "divert the Devaswom funds'' in the name of implementing the projects for Guruvayur.

NC(I) threatens stir

The NC(I) leaders threatened agitations against the reported move of the Government to use the Devaswom funds for non-temple purposes.

The ABGTKS president, K. G. Sukumaran Master, recalled that it was with the approval of the Kerala High Court that the State Government had declared the construction of the sewage treatment plant for Guruvayur at Chakkamkandam in 2001. The LDF Government had agreed to bear the entire expenditure of the Rs. 10-crore plant.

The High Court had again issued an order in January 2004 directing the Government to construct the sewage treatment plant at Chakkamkandam after meeting the demands of the local people, at its own expenditure.
