The Demographic Detonators
By Subramanian Swamy
The Search for a Hindu Agenda
The need for a Hindu Agenda arises because Hindus today are under a siege, and Hindus are not even cognisant of that siege. Worse, those professing to be Hindus and in high office are wittingly (for petty personal gains) or unwittingly (for a lack of a Hindu mindset) abetting the siege against the Hindu religion.
The siege today takes the form of (1) systematic denigration by the State, of Hindu icons that is clothed either in terms of the need to enforce the law, or by pure violent acts by terrorists. The bogus case of murder foisted on the Kanchi Shankaracharyas, the wild charges by CPM’s Brinda Karat against Swami Ramdev, the attempt to soil the holiness of Tirumala Hills by seeking to build a gambling casino and liquor bar, throwing of bombs on Akshardham, Ayodhya and Varanasi are examples of this denigration; (2) deliberate demeaning of Hindu religion, which began with the Pope of Vatican addressing a meeting in New Delhi on Deepavali day (November 3, 1999) and disparaging ‘the festival of lights’ by pronouncing that it would not remove the ‘darkness in our lives unless we ‘embrace Christ’; and continuing anti-Hindu tirade through fraudsters Benny Hinn and Ron Watts under the patronage of Smt Sonia Gandhi; (3) subtle propagation that the Hindu is incapable of defending himself in face of repeated terrorist attacks, and that inevitably the Hindu in the end will capitulate (e.g.,Hindu cleansing in Kashmir, Bangladesh and Pakistan, Indian Airlines airbus hijacking to Kandhar in December 1999, Parliament attack in 2002 etc.,); and (4) the changing religious demographic structure against the retention majority of Hindus, by illegal immigration of Bangladeshi Muslims, induced conversion of Hindus by foreign missionaries, and refusal by the minorities to participate in the national goal of family planning.
All these aspects of the siege are aimed at debilitating the Hindu mind, to ultimately present a fait accompli in which the Hindus do not form a substantial majority in the country. The siege today is not like what Ghazni had laid in Somnath or Ghori did in Ujjain. Those were crude and physical while the present siege is sophisticated and psychological. Hence, we must first understand the above delineated four aspects of the current siege. In this column, I will explain the last aspect-the demographic re-structuring that is taking place. It is a time-bomb ticking fast against the Hindu character of the nation.
To understand the demographic detonation that would take place in the coming fifty years, if the present trends continue, I will state some facts in simple language: About 1000 years ago, Akhand Hindustan i.e., present India, Pakistan, Bangladesh plus other nations of South Asia constituted about 30 million people. All 100 per cent were Hindus. Today Hindus have increased to 820 million, while Muslims have increased from zero to 400 million in Akhand Hindustan, also called the South Asian sub-continent. That is, the share of Muslim population has risen from zero percent in 1000 AD to 33 per cent today, while the share of Hindu population has declined from 100 per cent to 64 per cent in the sub-continent.
At present, Hindu population is growing at 1.5 per cent per year, while Muslim population in Akhand Hindustan is growing at 2.6 per cent per year. The Muslim population of present day India is growing at 2.2 per cent per year but illegal migration from Bangladesh adds to that rate. What is alarming is that further more, not only is the Hindu rate of population growth much lower than the Muslim rate but that the Hindu rate is decelerating while the Muslim rate is not. Part of this difference in growth is due to the higher prosperity of the Hindus relative to Muslims (because the richer have fewer children than poor), but a good part is also due to higher fertility rates amongst Muslim women due to non practice of family planning.
Based on these simplified facts and trends, I would predict that Hindus will lose their majority in the subcontinent by 2075. This projection is a wake-up call because a Muslim majority in the sub-continent, has not only huge national security implications but would threaten the existence of the Hindu civilisation itself. To realise this, Hindus have to only notice what has happened to them in Bangladesh where they were 32 per cent in 1951, and are down to 7 per cent living in state of semi-slavery. In Pakistan, the few Hindus surviving there have been deprived of all self-respect. Within the partitioned Akhand Hindustan, now called India that is Bharat in the Constitution, Hindus have been driven out from Kashmir Valley and made refugees in a land of 83 per cent Hindus! In Mau in UP, Hindus constituting 40 per cent, are not allowed to broadcast on public address system the Bharat Milap bhajans, and when they did on October 25, 2005, the directed Muslim mobs burned out Hindu shops and killed several. In Kerala, Hindus are 52 per cent of the population, and yet the Kerala Legislative Assembly passed an unanimous resolution demanding that a Muslim terrorist held for violent killings in Coimbatore should be released. Did the Assembly think of passing a resolution demanding the release of the Kanchi Shankaracharyas charged with murder in a bogus case about the Supreme Court held while granting bail to the Swamijis, that the case lacked credible prima facie basis? Obviously not, because Hindus do not vote unitedly for any Hindu issue. Hence, Hindus will face hell if they are in a minority, while even as a bare majority they can be out voted due to their lack of unity. It is only a matter of time before Hindus in India will lose their majority in vast areas of the nation.
A more detailed and sophisticated analysis of these trends has been done by Dr J.K. Bajaj and his colleagues at the Centre for Policy Studies in Chennai. Their recent publication is a must read for all literate Hindus. According to their analysis, the following trends are alarming: Hindus are already in minority in the Northeast, and heading for minority status in vast span from Rampur to Siliguri. In southern states, the US-based and Vatican assisted Christian missionaries have drawn a sophisticated plan for conversions based on Pin Code identification of vulnerable areas for flooding with new Churches and monetary inducements. There is little time for complacency for stemming this tide.
Lacking a Hindu mindset, Hindus themselves will compete with each other to further placate the minority. The amendment of the Foreigners Act, the reservation in jobs for minorities, and minority consciousness in Armed forces and Intelligence services are the some preview of things to come. In this context, it is necessary to know why and how Smt Sonia Gandhi has been positioned. Already much time has been wasted by not exposing her in the spurious plea that showing her the door would create sympathy for her. Hence, it is time to wake up the Hindutva forces and the unite with a common mindset. India will remain a Hindu civilisation securely only if Hindus are not less than 85 per cent in any state. Hence, we need an action plan to ensure and safeguard this Lakshman Rekha.
