Sangh Parivar slams AMU quota move as "anti-national"
New Delhi, May 20: Dubbing as "communal and anti-constitutional" the centre's decision to give 50 per cent reservation for Muslims in Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) in 36 courses, the Sangh Parivar, including BJP, today threatened to oppose it "tooth and nail".
"It is a blatantly communal decision aimed at one upmanship in Uttar Pradesh. It is against the constitution, against the nation and against the interests of Muslims. It is divisionary and motivated by appeasement politics," BJP vice-president M Venkaiah Naidu told reporters here.
He said the move would open a "pandora's box", and charged the government with "playing on emotions" and "continuing to play vote bank politics."
"We will oppose the move tooth and nail. We are exploring all possible action," he said when asked whether the party would legally challenge the Centre's decision.
RSS spokesman Ram Madhav alleged that "communal and appeasement politics" was being encouraged ever since the UPA came to power and the establishment of AMU on religious lines "played an important role in the partition of India".
"Fresh attempts are on to make it an institution of Muslim fundamentalists and every well meaning citizen should oppose it," he said.
Announcing country-wide protests against the move, VHP secretary general Praveen Togadia said his organisation would also mobilise students against the decision of the UPA government.
