Pseudo-Secularism

Hindu dharma is implicitly at odds with monotheistic intolerance. What is happening in India is a new historical awakening... Indian intellectuals, who want to be secure in their liberal beliefs, may not understand what is going on. But every other Indian knows precisely what is happening: deep down he knows that a larger response is emerging even if at times this response appears in his eyes to be threatening.

`Pseudo-secularism' a threat to nationalism, says Advani

Staff Correspondent

BHOPAL: The Bharatiya Janata Party president, L.K. Advani, said here on Sunday that forces trying to spread `pseudo-secularism' in the country posed a threat to nationalism.

Mr. Advani was addressing a function held to mark the 75th birthday of the senior BJP leader and Rahstriya Swayam Sevak Sangh pracharak Pyarelal Khandelwal.

The tendency to belittle dharma and oppose "Saraswati vandana" (offering prayers to Goddess Saraswati) was nothing but `pseudo-secularism.'

Praises RSS

BJP workers had left an impact on the minds of the people due to their commitment and devotion to ideology. The BJP owed its discipline to the RSS, he said.

Mr. Advani praised Mr. Khandelwal's service as a sangh pracharak and said the party needed workers who could follow the path shown by him [Mr. Khandelwal].

`Our culture under attack'

The former Union Minister for Human Resource Development, Murli Manohar Joshi, said there appeared to be a void in terms of ideology in the country. It was unfortunate that people were associating politics with muscle and money power.

"Our land, culture and ideology are under attack and the need of the hour is to face the challenge," he said.

The former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister, Uma Bharti, said it was unfortunate that sycophants were considered righteous and disciplined whereas those who were fearless, frank and outspoken were termed rebellious and defiant.

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Babulal Gaur and State BJP unit president Shivraj Singh Chauhan also spoke.
