Pseudo-Secularism

Hindu dharma is implicitly at odds with monotheistic intolerance. What is happening in India is a new historical awakening... Indian intellectuals, who want to be secure in their liberal beliefs, may not understand what is going on. But every other Indian knows precisely what is happening: deep down he knows that a larger response is emerging even if at times this response appears in his eyes to be threatening.

An idea to tackle jehadi terrorism

By Ram Gopal

In his recent article, "Tactic against terror", in the Pioneer (July 18), about the foiled Lashkar-e-Toiba's terrorist attack on Shri Ramjanmabhoomi in Ayodhya on July 5, former CBI chief, Shri Joginder Singh, states: "The aim of this dastardly terror strike was obviously to heighten communal tension, spread chaos: Widen the chasm between Hindus and Muslims, disrupt the Indo-Pakistan peace process...as well as derail the country's economic progress". As usual, he has stressed the need to maintain communal harmony.

Similar views are expressed after every such terrorist attack. In the meantime, more than 60,000 innocent lives have been lost on Indian soil alone. The bitter truth is that the terrorist attacks have been increasing in frequency, intensity and scope. Since 2001, these attacks have spread to the US, the Christian world of Europe and their embassies throughout the world. The latest event is the serial bomb blasts in London's metro-trains and a passenger bus on July 7, which killed 56 persons and injured another 700. Three of the suicide bombers of this attack were identified as Pakistani immigrants in London. Each of the said attacks required elaborate planning for months, huge financial outlay, modern weapons, supportive ammunition, communication equipment, up-to-date intelligence, minute-to-minute feed back, recruitment and training of human bombs and their harbingers. Taking a realistic view, it is perfidious to say that all this is aimed at creating just communal tension.

The secular world must first realise that all these terrorist acts are in pursuance of a larger goal of establishing 'Nizam-e-Mustafa', 'Kingdom of God', a Quranic order throughout the world. Underground preparations for it have been going on since the later half of the 19th century, following the rise of Christianity in Europe and disintegration of the sole surviving Ottoman (Islamic) empire and dethroning of its Caliph, the Sultan of Turkey. This prepared the ground for a Pan-Islamic movement in West Asia towards the close of the 19th century. It had its fierce echo in India in the 1920 'Khilafat movement'. After World War II, the European and American powers lost sight of the growing Pan-Islamic movement. It got a great boost in the 70s due to the oil boom. The dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1990-91 gave it the much needed confidence. Terrorist leaders of the time, like Osama bin Laden, said that Allah (God) had finished one of Islam's two greatest enemies and, with His grace, Muslims themselves would finish the other one (US) and its allies.

Based on Quranic teachings, a Pakistani Brigadier, S.K. Malik, wrote a scholarly book: The Quranic Concept of War. In his foreword to it, General Zia-ul-Haq, former President of Pakistan, highly commended it as an important guide to all citizens of an Islamic State, like Pakistan. Elaborating the concept of jehad as a total war on the way to Allah (God), Brig. Malik states that terrorism is an essential part of this total war. In the chapter, Strategy for War, he states: "During peace-time, our 'will' must find its expression through ‘preparation'. The war of preparation being waged by us during peace is vastly more important than the active war...Terror struck in the hearts of the enemies is not only a means, it is the end in itself.. It is the point where the means and the end meet and merge... Terror cannot be struck in the hearts of an army by merely cutting its lines of communication or depriving it of its routes of withdrawal. It is basically related to the strength or weakness of the human soul. It can be instilled only if the opponents' faith is destroyed. Psychological dislocation is temporary; spiritual dislocation is permanent... To be credible and effective, the strategy of deterrence must be capable of striking terror into the hearts of the enemy". Following this very Quranic principle, the perpetrators of the London bomb blasts, triggered four successive blasts on July 21, (within a period of two weeks), just to show that the Jehadis are more potent and capable of striking at will anywhere and anytime, despite all counter measures of the British police and intelligence network.

It should now be clear that Islam is not merely a religion. It is a unique political thought whose ultimate aim is to bring the entire mankind under the Islamic flag of Mecca (Saudi Arabia). Thus, the followers of Quran and Prophet Mohammed form a distinct species of human beings on this earth and need altogether different treatment. This treatment should be based on the principle of reciprocity.

Taking a realistic view, it is perfidious to say that all this is aimed at creating just communal tension.

Muslim governments in about 45 countries treat non-Muslims as inferior races, fit for destruction unless they accept the Quaran as the ultimate truth and Mohammed as the final Prophet. They don't allow non-Muslim preachers nor churches, temples or gurudwaras on their land. Non-Muslims are subject to Quranic blasphemy laws, which carry severe punishment for writing or uttering any disrespectful note about Mohammed or the Quran. No non-Muslim is allowed into Mecca that houses the Kaaba, their place of pilgrimage. Secularism is anathema to their faith.

Contrary to all this, Muslims are provided all freedom and facilities to preach their faith, build mosques and madrasas and live in every non-Muslim country. So much so that 20 million illegal Bangladeshi Muslim infiltrators are living in various parts of India, creating all sorts of economic, security, law and order problems. All attempts at expelling them during the past 25 years have failed because of India's own secularists and Marxists. Ironically, Muslims in India enjoy more rights than the Hindu majority on the pretext of minority protection. Hence, next to Pakistan, India is the largest nursery of Islamic fundamentalism.

To combat this unconventional and undeclared Islamic war, the non-Muslim and non-Marxist nations must first make a common cause. Even the Quaran provides its justification. Ayats 19-22 of Sura L VIII divides humanity into two distinct parties, namely, followers of the Quaran and Prophet Mohammed make the party of Allah and all others make the party of the Devil. There is also the injunction that the party of Allah should physically conquer the party of the Devil.

For their survival, therefore, the non-Muslim nations should get together. Each of them should enact special laws in respect of Muslims, giving them the same treatment as the Muslim governments give their non-Muslim subjects or non-Muslim immigrants. Simultaneously, they should bring a resolution before the Security Council requiring every non-Muslim state to delete all passages from the Quaran and the Hadith, (meant for teaching institutions or for the general public), which preach or sanctify religious animosity between Muslims and non-Muslims, inspire religious war, terrorist activities, including suicide bombing, or justify killings of 'kafirs' (non-Muslims). Unabridged copies may be kept in the archives for record and reference by research scholars.

The non-Muslim nations should get together. Each of them should enact special laws in respect of Muslims, giving them the same treatment as the Muslim governments give their non-Muslim subjects or non-Muslim immigrants.

In this context, reference should be made to the statement of Mr. Gladstone, the famous British prime-minister of the 19th century, who had said in the House of Commons, with a copy of the Quaran in his hand, "as long as there is this Quran, there would be no peace on earth".

The above two steps, though non-violent, will initially cause strong protests form hard-core Islamists, but gradually their saner element, who have been kept muzzled for long, will come out in the open with cries for reforms and to go along with the modern thoughts of secularism, principles of co-existence, and religious freedom. In the ensuing intellectual debate, large numbers of them would like to embrace Christianity, Buddhism, or Hinduism. Leaders of these faiths should also, therefore, get ready to absorb such of the Muslims in their religion and social order. The chief merit of these two non-violent methods is that the use of weapons and explosives would be eliminated or at least reduced.
